Twice a year suits most Toowoomba homes. If you have gums or jacarandas over the roofline, twice is not enough — and the cost of getting it wrong is not the gutter, it is the fascia behind it.
Most homes: twice a year. Once after the autumn leaf drop, and once in early spring before storm season starts in earnest.
Under heavy tree cover: three to four times a year. Gums shed bark and leaf all year round rather than in one clean drop, so there is no season where the gutter stays empty.
The Garden City name is earned, and the tree canopy that earns it is directly over a lot of rooflines. Jacarandas, camphor laurels, liquidambars and the odd claret ash all drop heavily in autumn. Gums are the harder problem: they shed leaf, bark and small twigs continuously, so a gutter under a gum never really gets a quiet month.
Elevation adds to it. At around 700 metres the Range gets long dew and regular fog, so whatever lands in the gutter stays damp rather than drying out and blowing off. Damp leaf litter packs down into a sludge that holds water against the metal and grows moss on top of itself. That is why a gutter can look fine from the ground and still be full.
Suburbs with the oldest, tallest street trees are the worst for it — East Toowoomba, Rangeville, Mount Lofty and Middle Ridge. Out on acreage at Highfields, Cabarlah and Hampton it is usually gums, and usually a shed roof as well as a house roof.
What it actually costs
Water goes backwards. When a gutter fills, the overflow does not politely run off the front edge. It backs up under the first row of tiles or sheets and runs down the inside of the fascia. You do not see it from the ground. You see it two years later as a soft fascia board, a stained ceiling cornice or paint lifting off the eave lining.
Wet litter rusts steel gutters from the inside. Packed leaf sludge holds moisture against the base of the gutter permanently. On older Zincalume and steel guttering that is where the pinholes start, and a pinhole in the base is not repairable — that run gets replaced.
If you are on tank water, it is your drinking water. Rotting leaf litter, bird droppings and whatever else is sitting in the gutter is the first thing a downpour washes into the tank. On acreage that is the single best reason to keep to a schedule, and it is why we divert or disconnect downpipes before we start and reconnect them before we leave.
And it is a fire load. Dry leaf and bark packed in a gutter is exactly the fuel an ember needs. On the treed western and northern edges of the region that is worth a clean in early spring on its own.
You do not need to climb up. In heavy rain, stand back and watch the gutter line. If water is sheeting over the front edge anywhere, or running down a wall instead of out of the downpipe, that run is blocked. A gutter that is working discharges from the downpipe and nowhere else.
Look for plants. Grass, weeds or a small wattle seedling growing out of a gutter is not a curiosity — it means there is enough packed organic matter up there to hold root moisture year round, which means it has been full for a long time.
Check the downpipe outlets at ground level after rain. If nothing comes out of one while the others run, the blockage is in the pipe rather than the gutter, and clearing the gutter alone will not fix it.
Look at the fascia and the eave lining from the ground. Staining, swelling, bubbled paint or a line of mould along the eave is water that has already been going where it should not, and the gutter above it is the cause.
Watch for a sag. A gutter full of wet litter is heavy, and it will pull away from the fascia over time. A visible dip or a gap between the gutter and the fascia board means it has been carrying weight it was never designed to carry.
And note the last time it was done. If nobody can remember, it is due. Most people underestimate it by about a year.
Clearing by hand rather than blowing it out and leaving it. Debris comes out into a bag, the gutter is flushed so the sludge in the base goes as well, and every downpipe is run through and checked for flow. If a downpipe will not clear, we tell you, rather than leaving it to find out in the next storm.

No. Guards keep the big leaves out, which genuinely helps, but fine material still gets through and builds up underneath, and the guard itself collects a mat of litter on top. Guards stretch the interval out; they do not remove it.
People do, and it is the most common way we see gutters get worse. A blower moves the dry top layer and packs the wet sludge harder into the base and into the downpipe mouths. It also puts you on a roof, which is where most serious home maintenance injuries happen.
Not the way we do it. Downpipes into the tank are diverted or disconnected before we start and reconnected before we leave, so nothing we dislodge ends up in your water. We ask about tank water at quote stage rather than waiting for you to raise it. We also clean tank exteriors.
We flush every downpipe as part of the job and check it is discharging. If one is blocked further down or into a stormwater line we cannot reach, we will tell you what we found and what it needs, rather than quietly leaving it.
Yes, and the order matters: roof cleaning first, then gutters, because a roof wash brings moss and lichen down into the gutter. Doing it the other way round means cleaning the gutter twice. Booking them together also costs less than two separate visits.
